"Hydropower has been an effective source of clean energy generation for more than a century," said IRENA Director General Francesco La Camera, adding, however, that "with the rapidly changing energy landscape, it is important to reassess its future role and take advantage of recent technological advances that can maximize its potential, while ensuring its sustainability and climate resilience."

Among the urgent actions to be taken in the coming years are certainly investments in advanced technological solutions, reported by the Hydropower-Europe Research and Innovation Agenda (digitalization, improvement of infrastructure and equipment resilience,etc.).  But not only that, hydropower will also have to work on the main directions of the Strategic Industry Roadmap  (sustainability, public awareness, development of new business models, climate change adaptation,etc.).
