RheEnergise High-Density Pumped Hydro

A new webinar series under Innovations from Industry spotlighted recent advances in long-duration energy storage, with a focus on RheEnergise’s HD Hydro technology, an innovative approach to pumped hydro storage designed for greater flexibility and scalability.

HD Hydro builds on the principles of conventional pumped storage but introduces a proprietary high-density fluid with an energy density 2.5 times that of water. This enables deployment in lower elevation sites, expanding the geographical potential of hydropower storage beyond traditional mountainous regions. The system is designed for faster deployment timelines (around three years) and aims to provide a cost-effective solution to support the energy transition.

During the session, RheEnergise co-founder and CTO Tamás Bertényi presented insights from the company’s first fully operational demonstrator project. The webinar covered the core technology, validated performance data, and the pathway towards commercialisation. It also explored how close collaboration with the established hydropower sector is shaping the development and scaling of the solution.
